Assignment 2 commentary
When I first approached the assignment, I thought it was quite an interesting and fun assignment as I had previously took NM3219 on Digital Storytelling and there was an assignment similar to this as well! My story involves my dad, who eats squid and has an allergy reaction. He then went on to receive treatment at the hospital and recovered. At first , all the pictures taken were from a mid-far range point and after receiving feedback, i started incorporating some close up shots and took pictures from not just a neutral angle but also from a low angle. For the first shot in the storyboard, instead of using a mid angle shot as i have originally planned, i changed it to a close up to focus on how my dad was sleeping. For the 4th picture in the storyboard, I took the picture from a low angle to give a slightly comical effect and to convey how eager he was to eat the squid. In the 5th shot, I took a extremely close-up shot of my dad eating the squid to show that he was actually of eating it. Initially, i did not include this shot in but after receiving critique on how more details and effort can be put into showing the audience that my dad actually did eat the squid, i included this shot in. Before, it was just my dad holding the culteries and the next moment, he was having an allergy reaction. Thus, it was too abrupt and the 5th shot was needed to show the transition smoother. For the 7th picture, I took the picture of my dad in the "hospital" from a higher angle, to give the audience a sense of weakness that my dad is facing. Taking pictures from a higher angle can convey that my dad is currently not in his best state.
Initially, there was actually a dent in the squid prop before my dad was shown to be eating the squid but after someone pointed it out that the dent made it looked like the squid had been eaten before my dad actually ate it, i corrected it by fixing the dent in the picture before my dad was shown to be eating it and then putting a dent in the squid prop after my dad had eaten it in the 5th picture.
There was a discarded shot of my dad walking down the hallway which i did not use as he was too far. He was too small in the frame and it was not appropriate to use it. For the other discarded pictures, some reasons for not including them include my dad not being prepared or that i was taking from a few angles and positions so that I could later choose a diverse range of shots. One of the discarded shots was about my dad preparing to eat the squid from a high angle, but I realise it does not convey the excitement of my dad to eat the squid. There were also a few discarded shots of my dad sleeping. I realized that my dad did not take off his spectacles for one of the shots and also figured that i should use a close up to have a attention-snatching opening scene.
I have learnt many things in this assignment but the most important thing i have learnt is that the small details are very important, and all of it goes a long way. I have really taken note of the lighting, avoiding taking pictures in low light. I have also tried to include in props and small details wherever I can, and to make the transitions between pictures smooth and clear so that there are no abrupt jumps in between . I have also tried varying shot sizes, and camera angles.
