Assignment 3


I decided to do an infographic on how to put out a fire and searched for information online. 

I did my infographic regarding information on the different types of fire, the death causes from fires, and the safety strategies. Initially , I did not know how to make a pie chart. However, after critique, I learnt how to utilize the pie chart tool to put the sizing of each component as well as using the eyedropper tool to create the legend for the pie chart. In my initial design, I wanted to elaborate on the classes of fire around a 5 corner polygon but I did not know how to change the number of sides from the automated 6 to 5. After critique, I learnt how to make a 5 sided polygon but decided to change the layout of how I will present my information on the different classes of fire as some areas had too much empty space while the bottom was very cramped. After the critique, I also standardized the font , sizing and the fills and strokes of each heading as previously, some of my heading had strokes while some did not. I also added in a fire background at the bottom of my final work and adjusted the transparency. I decided to use a black background so that the red, orange colors will be more contrasting against the background. Previously, I used green for the heading which I decided to change to red instead. This is because I realize that green is usually a color that stands for environmentalism  and this could be misleading or inappropriate for this infographic topic. Also, I changed the label of “A” , “B” etc to “Class A”, “Class B” etc so that it would be easier to understand. I also created some fire icons using the pen tool and coloring it with fills and strokes, in order to fill up the empty space in some areas. For my text, some of my  sentences started off with capital letters while some didn't, so I changed that too, as well as aligned the texts to each other.  From this assignment, I have learnt that standardization and small details are very important. I also learnt how to use colors to distinguish and draw the attention of readers to certain important points and how to better organize information such that the reader will have an easy time understanding and sorting out information.

When I first approached the assignment, I thought it was quite an interesting and fun assignment as I had previously took NM3219 on Digital Storytelling and there was an assignment similar to this as well! My story involves my dad, who eats squid and has an allergy reaction. He then went on to receive treatment at the hospital and recovered. At first , all the pictures taken were from a mid-far range point and after receiving feedback, i started incorporating some close up shots and took pictures from not just a neutral angle but also from a low angle. For the first shot in the storyboard, instead of using a mid angle shot as i have originally planned, i changed it to a close up to focus on how my dad was sleeping. For the 4th picture in the storyboard, I took the picture from a low angle to give a slightly comical effect and to convey how eager he was to eat the squid. Assignment 1 Commentary

Initially, I was  worried that i would not be able to do this assignment properly as I was not familiar with the tools in Illustrator. However, after fumbling about for abit , and learning more about the tools, i realize that it was actually very manageable and even fun! I chose to use this picture of this lightbulb because i was in a pretty café and the lightbulb looks interesting and unique, and I wanted to abstract it into from its unique lightbulb design to a common lightbulb that everyone could recognize easily  With the use of illustrator , i used the pen tool to trace the outline of the lightbulb, including in minute and small details such as the light ligaments inside as well as the designs of the lightbulb outside. Before tracing the outline of the lightbulb, i had to lower the transparency of the image so that it would be easier to trace. Ex C

The ad is a Heinz Ketchup ad, with a bottle in the middle. The bottle of ketchup is cut in horizontal lines, which is the signifier. This is to evoke one's memory of tomatoes which are placed on top of each other and sliced. This is to capture the attention of consumers as well as signify that their ketchup has no chemicals as it is from fresh tomatoes.  The sliced tomatoes used to represent the ketchup bottle looks fresh, signifying that their products are fresh and natural. The phase " No one grows Ketchup like Heinz" shows that Heinz delivers fresh ketchup from fresh tomatoes which are grown by the brand themselves. The green stem at the top of the tomato-bottle is also a signifier to signify that the tomatoes they grow are very fresh, as green is a colour linked to nature.
