1) Description
I have chose "Starry Night" as my artwork to critique.
The artwork was made by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889 and he painted it from a room in the mental asylum where was recovering from mental illness and his ear amputation. It is an oil-on-canvas painting.
In this painting, there are swirls, stars, buildings, rolling hills, the moon, trees and a church.
There is a town in the foreground, hills in the midground and a blue night sky filled with stars in the background.
This is a night time scene painting , and it seems to be painted from a elevated point of view, where the town is seen to be at the bottom of the painting and buildings are small.
There is a much bigger tree in the foreground of the painting, and the town is small compared to the trees.
The main colours used are black, dark blue, violet, green, white, and yellow.
2) Analysis
The artist used a cool colour palette of blues, greens and violet for the night sky, with a orange-ish yellow for the stars and lights of the town. The colours complement each other and create harmony.
There is a variety of line thickness and direction in the brush strokes.
There is a contrast of geometric shapes in the houses with their roofs and the organic shapes of the surrounding landscape such as the tall trees and the wide hills.
The lines and contours of the painting are very soft and not harsh.
The artist has created movement by the addition of swirls in the sky and the brushstrokes techniques he used. The tree also has wavy lines which seems as though it is swaying in the wind.
The tonal range of the painting creates a calming and peaceful atmosphere.
3) Interpretation
This painting makes me feel calm and relaxed, yet with a tinge of sadness.
The colours of this artwork creates a sense of calmness for me, yet it does not appear too dull or too meloncholy
as the yellowish orange in the moon brightens up the artwork considerably, and the stars also give a more excitable effect. The lines and waves of the colours add more dimension to the painting and gives it a more #D effect, reminding me of water at the same time. This makes the painting dreamlike and even ethereal. The artist may have painted this art to show how the night can be so beautiful if we stop to take a look.
4) Judgment
This is an artwork that is successful as it used the elements and principles of art to create a painting that evokes emotions and imagination through expressive and creative brushstrokes. The colours of the night sky come together to invoke feelings such as calm in viewers as well, while the yellow stars and moon successfully uses contrast to create an excitment or feelin of hope against the dark nightsky background.
